With the world seeming to slowly return to normal, one thing that has been normal for the last 51 years isn’t happening. SCORE announced that the 52nd Baja 500 is canceled for 2020.
In a recent release SCORE said,” After further review with Government Authorities regarding the conditions in Ensenada under the new CoronaVirus (COVID-19) Stoplight Monitoring System activated in Mexico as of June 1st, SCORE International is announcing that the 52nd SCORE Baja 500 will not take place as scheduled from July 14th through July 19th.”
This is a huge blow to the off-road racing community as the Baja 500 is one race on the schedule that everyon looks forward to. The cancellation of the Baja 500 maybe just the tip of the ice berg for the 2020 SCORE season.
SCORE is the only major desert racing organization that races in another country. The COVID-19 virus may have even more of an effect on the 2020 season as SCORE will be announcing more information on the rest of the season as soon as possible.
Does this mean that we may see a SCORE event back on US soil? It would be something enthusiasts, racers, and off-road part manufacturers could get excited about.
A ripple effect of the cancellation of the Baja 500 may lead to larger entries into the upcoming US based races. It will be interesting to see what will happen for the rest of the year in all off-road rcing. What do you think will happen? Tell us in the comments below!
