World record attempts and UTVs seem to be popping up yearly. Nitro Circus along with Travis Pastrana set up a massive world record attempt at the White Knuckle Event in Huntsville, Tennessee for Phil “Smagical” Smage.
Nitro Circus is known for their entertaining shows that showcase action sports athletes and tricks. This show though would end in a completely different way. The massive jump was supposed to take Smagical over 245 feet, but due to everyone’s surprise, it was overshot.
This was a test run at 180 feet. It went so well and so smooth. The downside got a little steeper in the sweet spot from 200 to 250 feet but phil landed well past that on his record attempt. I have never been more at a loss for how anything could have ever gone as wrong as it did. @smagical Is the most positive person on earth and been the one bringing the rest of us up. He broke his neck but he is alive, moving his legs and shocked his surgeon already with the progress he has made. #smagicalstrong I love you buddy.
The Crew had done multiple test jumps on this setup, which had all gone to plan. Unfortunately, when the time came for the official record attempt, Smagical went further than anyone could have imagined.
Smagical sustained multiple broken ribs, broken wrist, collarbone and fracture vertebrae from C3-C7. That evening Phil underwent spinal surgery to fuse his C3 to C7 vertebrae. His surgeons decided that fusion is the best course of action for his injuries and will give the best possible outcome.
We wish Smacial the best and a safe and speedy recovery. To send your wishes and to help Phil “Smagical” Smage check out his Road 2 Recovery page.
