With the announcement of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 there is now another player in the full-size off-road truck segment. The Raptor has been the long time champion in this segment, but with the addition of the Ram TRX and then the Raptor R coming down the pipeline this is one competitive area.
The Silverado ZR2 pushes Chevy Trucks’ off-road performance truck segment further and once again Chevy offers a race-proven off-road performance customers can buy right from the showroom floor. The ZR2 brings together a premium interior, immersive technology, a number of standard safety equipment features and off-road prowess in a comprehensive package.
“Chevrolet has been competing on some of the most grueling, toughest off-road courses with a prototype Silverado ZR2 in the Best in the Desert race series,” said Dom Lester, General Motors chief engineer, Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports Engineering. “We applied what we learned in racing and Moab testing to the new ZR2 to offer a supremely capable and confidence-inspiring package, but one that doesn’t beat you up on the highway with its ride quality. It’s equally capable and comfortable.”
With everything new with the 2022 Silverado the addition of the ZR2 couldn’t come at a better time. These are the Top 3 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 features coming to show rooms in 2022.
Eye Catchy Appearance
When the Silverado was released with the complete make over in 2019 the style was definitely a love it or hate it look. But as time went on, the look has grown on everyone and the refresh on the 2022 Silverado ZR2 in our opinion made it even better.
In addition to its functional features, the new Silverado ZR2 is distinguished by several aesthetic cues, including a new black hood insert, a unique grille with integrated lighting and a “flow-tie” emblem, ZR2 badges, and unique 18-inch wheels.
The bumper is designed with removable end caps for easier replacement in the event of close encounters with rocks or other off-road objects. The dual exhaust has been placed before the rear bumper to eliminate potential damage.
New high-approach steel front bumper designed for off-road strength, durability and clearance that enables an improved 31.8-degree approach angle compared to other Silverado off-road models.
There are also 12 standard tie-downs, more than any competitor, and innovative features such as the available and industry-first power up/down tailgate and the available six-position Multi-Flex tailgate.
Three new exterior colors are offered with the refreshed 2022 Silverado: Dark Ash, Sand Dune and a vibrant blue recently named Glacier Blue Metallic by some of the most loyal Chevy owners, Chevy Truck Legends. The Silverado ZR2 will only be available in a crew cab with short bed configuration.
One of the biggest refreshes is in the interior of the Silverado, and the ZR2 brings those and adds some. The ZR2 features a unique Jet Black/Graystone leather-trimmed interior with complementing dark trim.
A 13.4-inch-diagonal color touchscreen and new 12.3-inch-diagonal configurable digital instrument cluster gives a high end feel. The new dash look gives the interior of the ZR2 a massive sense of style when hitting the trail.
Keeping with the 21st century the dash has Google built-in and offers access to Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play right on the infotainment screen. This new experience works with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capability and offers new levels of customization and flexibility for customers.
“It’s a more contemporary, refined design that elevates the premium nature of the interior,” said Alexandre Scartezini, Chevrolet Truck lead interior designer. “It’s also a more driver-oriented space that’s connected to our performance heritage, with a hint of Corvette influence in its design DNA.”
One of the biggest ergonomic changes in the interior that we liked to see was the removal of the column shifter. The shifter has been moved to the center console and while it may take some space away it fits in the console better.
What would be a Top 3 on an off-road truck without discussing the off-road capability. The Silverado ZR2 comes packed with more off-road features than another Chevrolet truck including the Colorado ZR2.
The Silverado ZR2 comes standard with the 6.2-liter V8 engine, delivering 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, mated with the 10-speed automatic transmission. This may not have the extreme power like the Raptor R or the TRX, but having all the power doesn’t always mean you will win the race.
Multimatic DSSV dampers made their way to the Silverado ZR2 after the success on the Colorado ZR2. While the basic design for the Multimatic DSSV dampers remains similar between Colorado ZR2 and Silverado ZR2 the seals have been redesigned to be stronger and more secure.
The Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve damper features three separate spool valves to control damping and three connected chambers for fluid flow. In addition, the Silverado ZR2 features uniquely-tuned springs that, with the Multimatic dampers, increase maximum front and rear suspension travel, compared to the Silverado Trail Boss.
Increasing the wheel travel on the Silverado ZR2 helps with the ride off-road. The front total travel is 9.84 inches (250 mm) and rear travel is 10.62 inches (270 mm) on the Silverado ZR2 which has been increased in the front by 1.97 inches and 1-inch in the rear over the Trail Boss.
The Silverado ZR2 also features specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, including Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling. Keeping with rock crawling the Silverado ZR2 features front and rear e-lockers, a unique skid plate package, and 33-inch mud-terrain tires.
Overall we are super excited to see the release of the Silverado ZR2 and the complete refresh of the Silverado half-ton pickup. It seems like it is going to do very well in the market, but it may still be missing the mark competing with the Raptor and TRX, but Chevrolet was not looking to step into that arena.
