UPDATE 3/17/20: Best in the Desert announced that they will be postponing the Jagged X National Desert Cup Presented by Quantum Motorsports to a future date.
In a statement Best in the Desert said:
“With a heavy heart, we’ve made the decision to postpone the upcoming Jagged X National Desert Cup Presented by Quantum Motorsports due to the ramifications of the Covid-19 virus,” commented Daryl Folks, CEO of Best In The Desert. “This event, in particular, requires cooperation with several land use agencies, and today we were informed that they might be instructed at the federal level not to continue even with already permitted off-road events. We didn’t want to be in the position where all our racers, sponsors, families and pit support personnel came to the event only to have it canceled at the last minute by one of the federal agencies outside our control. We also had to consider the safety of all, as safety has always been at the top of our list at Best In The Desert. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, but please stay tuned for the replacement date as we fully intend to host this exciting event in the near future.”
“The decision to cancel this event has weighed heavily on my heart as well,” commented Best In The Desert CMO Bryan Folks. “In fact, during my tenure as owner of Best In The Desert, this is perhaps the most difficult decision that we have had to face, mainly because it is in direct contrast to my father’s core beliefs. Casey Folks believed in perseverance and never giving up. When he made a commitment, as we have to our racers with this event, he fulfilled that commitment. However, we’ve had to accept we are in new, unchartered waters with the Covid-19 virus. After a long meeting with our staff this morning we have concluded that the only option is to postpone this event. I want to give a very heartfelt thank you to our internal staff, for their dedication in trying to keep this date alive by working every minute through government updates and finding ways to keep moving forward. I also want to thank all of our racers, sponsors, volunteer staff, and supporters who stayed positive and supported us in keeping the possibility alive. Finally, I want everyone to know while we have had to postpone the event I assure you it will still be held and to the high standards you have come to expect from Best In The Desert.”
In the wake of the President of the United States address to the country and declaring a national emergency due to the COVID-19 virus, Best in the Desert has announced actions to help mitigate the potential risk at the upcoming Jagged X National Desert Cup presented by Quantum Motorsports on March 20-22, 2020.
“We take the Covid-19 matter very seriously and want to make sure our racers, pit crews, staff, and volunteers are protected as much as possible,” commented Best In The Desert CMO Bryan Folks. “We want to remind everyone who participates in our event the importance of following preventative measures.”
“These measures include washing hands, avoiding direct contact with fellow racers, covering your mouth when coughing, and keeping a safe distance as much as possible from other people,” added Folks. “In particular, we ask that anyone who is not feeling well, has a temperature, or experiencing flu-like symptoms not attend the race.”
Because Best in the Desert events are held outdoors with limited exposure to large groups in confined settings, the organization feels it is safe to continue with the event and has received permission from Clark County Parks and Recreation as of Friday, March 13, 2020, to do so.
“We realize we are in new unchartered territory with the recent news about the Covid -19 virus. We want to be proactive and sensitive to our racers’ health while also considering their overwhelming support for the race to continue as planned. If any of our racers do not feel comfortable competing in the race we will gladly refund their entry fee,” stated Race Operations Manager, Donald Jackson. “We look forward to hosting this amazing off-road event especially under the new supercross-style racing format.”
We anticipate that there will be changes across the off-road racing board, and like the announcement earlier by SCORE, something like this was expected. Tell us what you think about the changes in the comments below!
